Lot 621 Chinese Mining Camp Swords NV - , - - General Americana
Lot of 2: 1) Coin sword, possibly made in the 19th Century by Chinese workers in mining communities. The purpose of a coin sword, which was typically mounted over someone`s bed, was to ward away evil spirits. Measures 16.75", there is some wear on the handle and a piece has fallen off. 2) Sword with holder. Sword measures 20.75” and holder measures 17.25". There is some wear and also a crack on the handle. As a young mining geologist, Fred Holabird remembers discovering similar swords while working in Eureka, NV. These swords serve as important tokens of the past, and to remember the many immigrants who came to the Western U.S. During the 19th Century. - Woodward Collection
